With the help of webcams and internet, you can talk with someone who is thousands miles away just as easily as if that person were in front of you. With the help of the ShinningMorning-developed application Magic Camera, you can make that webcam chat a little bit more entertaining. You can add an interesting background, a photo frame or an animation in order to entertain the person you’re talking to.

The Magic Camera download weighs in at 16MB, which isn’t very much. On today’s high speed connections, the download will complete in very little time. To install the application on your Windows-powered computer you just need to follow the instructions presented by the setup wizard. You should be done in very little time.

Once the app is up and running, it will be fairly easy to get accustomed to its interface. The bit that will interest you the most is to the right; including all the effects and filters that you can use to enhance your webcam chat. There are frames, makes, animations, distortion, filters, and others to choose from.

A couple of interesting features are that you can capture what is on the screen and stream it to the virtual webcam set video files as the virtual webcam’s input source, select photos that will be displayed as a slideshow by the virtual webcam. This means that you can show someone what you see on your desktop, that you can stream a video, and that you can show pictures.

With the help of the Snap and the Record functions, you can record a chat. The Snap function lets you grab the current virtual webcam’s output and save it as an image. The Record function brings up the webcam recorder dialog and starts a recording.

You can use Magic Camera with pretty much any instant messaging and VoIP application out there. I’m just going to mention the most popular ones: Skype, Windows Live Messenger, Yahoo! Messenger, and ChatRoulette.

So, when you’re talking with someone and you want to have a bit of fun, use one of the many effects to make yourself look funny. Even if you don’t have a webcam, you can still use Magic Camera to stream your desktop or to stream videos.

The funny effects Magic Camera has to offer will put a smile on your face and so will the extra functionality the application has to offer.

Pros

Magic Camera works Skype, Yahoo! Messenger, Windows Live Messenger and other popular chat software; it also works with all cameras. It is quite easy to get accustomed to Magic Camera’s interface and take advantage of the nice and large collection of effects. With Magic Camera, you can stream your desktop, video, or pictures. You can use the trial version for an unlimited amount of time.

Cons

The trial version displays a watermark and a nag screen; to get rid of them you must purchase the full version. Once the installation process completes, the browser launches and you are directed to the developer’s website.
